Discover the medieval town of Besalú

The historical significance of Besalú makes it one of the most visited places in Catalonia, especially due to its architectural charm. The town features monuments that have remained intact over the centuries, such as the iconic Romanesque bridge, the Jewish baths, the church of the Sant Pere monastery, the old pilgrims’ hospital of Sant Julià, the church of Sant Vicenç, and the Gothic hall of the Royal Curia Palace, among others.

The original core of the town was the Besalú castle, documented since the 10th century in the Early Middle Ages, an emblem that made the town one of the most important counties in Catalonia. Besalú served as a link between the coastal, agricultural, and commercial lands, and the highlands where livestock farming predominated. In fact, by the 14th century it was still the main commercial center of La Garrotxa, attracting farmers, artisans, traders, and merchants from the surrounding areas.

Today, Besalú exudes a pleasant romantic atmosphere, especially at sunset, ideal for couples. Walking through the streets and squares, visitors can feel the charm of an ancient medieval town thanks to its diverse heritage elements.

For almost a decade, at the beginning of September, the Besalú Medieval Fair takes place, a few days celebrating the town’s glorious past. The village transforms into the medieval county it once was, recreating its historical moments.

All the locals dress up, and shops are decorated to create a medieval setting that covers the old town and the banks of the Fluvià River. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities: parades, music, knight tournaments, catapult launches, knight battles, markets, horse and boat rides, bracelet workshops, storytelling for children, guided tours, and an outdoor dinner accompanied by a spectacular light and fire show.
